Greatlands Copse

A proper woodland walk rather than a destination with facilities, Greatlands Copse sits just outside Taunton and offers exactly what you'd want from a Somerset forest - decent trees, quiet paths, and the kind of peace that makes you remember why you came to the countryside in the first place.

It's small enough that you won't need more than an hour unless you're the type who stops to photograph every moss-covered log. The woodland floor is soft underfoot, the canopy does its job on drizzly days, and there's genuine woodland atmosphere without the crowds you'd find at bigger attractions. Walkers will appreciate the straightforward routes; families with young kids might find it a touch limited for a full morning, though it makes a nice break between other activities.

There's nothing fancy here - no cafe, no visitor centre, no entry fee that I'm aware of. Just park sensibly nearby and head in. Spring's probably loveliest when the bluebells do their thing, though it's decent any time you fancy some greenery.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks dotting the area - Holly Bush, Cornish Farm, or Ashe Farm are all within three miles - this works well as a morning constitutional before heading into Taunton or exploring the Levels proper. It's not a headline attraction, but it's the sort of local knowledge spot that genuinely enhances a Somerset week rather than demanding a special trip.
