Solar System Model: Saturn

Out near Otford, between Sevenoaks and the green belt, someone's had the bright idea of mapping the entire solar system across the village landscape. Saturn's your first proper stop on this walking trail - a giant model that makes you realise just how absurdly far away the actual thing is.

It's free to wander round, which is the main thing. The whole model stretches across Otford village, so you're not looking at a gallery in the traditional sense - more a series of installations scattered about that you clock as you walk. Saturn itself sits at a particular spot, and it's genuinely surreal to stand there and think about the scale involved. The detail varies depending on what's been maintained, but that's part of the charm.

This works best if you've got walkers in tow or you're already exploring the village anyway. Kids sometimes grip it immediately, others get bored once they've seen a couple of planets. Allow a good hour or two if you're committed to doing the full circuit, though plenty of people just hit their favourite planets and call it done.

Sevenoaks is your nearest proper town for supplies. If you're basing yourselves at Thriftwood Country Park nearby, this makes a decent afternoon walk - the kind of thing that breaks up a park holiday without eating into your entertainment budget. Best done in reasonable weather, obviously, since you're outside the entire time.
