Solar System Model: Jupiter

You won't find this in any tourist board brochure, which is precisely why it's worth knowing about. Otford has installed a scale model of the solar system spread across the village itself - Jupiter is just one of nine stops on what amounts to a free, self-guided walk that doubles as both astronomy lesson and countryside ramble.

The model uses real proportions, so the distances between planets are genuinely vast. Jupiter sits somewhere along the route between Sevenoaks and the village proper, and seeing it rendered at scale rather than as a dot in a textbook actually makes you grasp just how enormous these things are. There's a marker with information - nothing flash, just the facts you need.

It's brilliant for families with school-age kids who've just learned about space, or for anyone doing the Kent walking circuit around Sevenoaks. Don't expect a visitor centre or café - this is village infrastructure, not attractions infrastructure. The charm is partly in the simplicity of it. You're effectively getting a free astronomy walk with the added bonus of learning your way around Otford itself.

Allow a couple of hours if you're doing the full solar system route, or just thirty minutes if you're hitting Jupiter as a standalone stop. Best done on a clear day when you can actually see the markers clearly. If you're camping or staying at Thriftwood Country Park nearby, it's an excellent excuse to get out and explore beyond the site itself. Free, naturally, and genuinely educational without feeling like homework.
