Soar Lane Diamond Wood

You'll find this wooded stretch tucked between Loughborough and the Midshires Way, where a former quarry has been slowly reclaimed by nature into something rather surprising. Soar Lane Diamond Wood is essentially a local woodland walk that's gained a modest following among people who enjoy spotting where industrial past meets present greenery.

The main draw is wandering through the trees and catching glimpses of the quarry workings - old stone faces and levels create an unusual backdrop you won't find in most English woodland. It's not dramatic, but there's something oddly absorbing about the geology on display. Walking routes loop through here, some muddy depending on the season, and the whole thing takes between half an hour and ninety minutes depending on how thorough you're being.

Geologists and industrial heritage types will find more to chew on than casual strollers. Kids might get restless after an hour unless they're the sort who enjoy scrambling around old stone workings and spotting birds. The woodland itself is pleasant but nothing particularly rare.

Best visited after a few dry days - I'd avoid it after heavy rain when it becomes a bit of a bog in places. Free to access, though parking is limited and you'll need to work out your own approach from nearby roads. If you're staying at Midshires Way Campsite and Alpaca Farm just down the road, it's a decent half-day outing to stretch your legs without committing to anything strenuous. Worth the detour if you're already in the area exploring Nottinghamshire's walking routes.
