Snow Hill

The walk up Snow Hill, just outside Skipton, rewards you with one of those views that makes you forget why you were huffing on the climb. It's not a massive peak - more of a proper fell than a mountain - but the outlook across the Dales is worth the effort, especially on a clear day when you can see for miles across limestone country.

You're looking at roughly forty minutes to an hour up from the carpark, depending on fitness and how many times you stop for breath. The path is well-trodden and fairly straightforward, though it can be boggy after rain. Once you're up there, you get the real sense of why people come to this corner of Yorkshire - rolling moorland, dry stone walls cutting across the landscape, and on a good day, visibility right across to Pendle Hill.

It's cracking for walkers who want something achievable without spending half the day on it. Families with older kids will manage it fine, though younger ones might grumble about the steep bits. Solitary types come here for the space and silence, and honestly, you won't feel crowded even in summer.

The nearest overnight option is Tip Top Campsite, only three and a half miles away - a proper base if you're planning to explore the Yorkshire Three Peaks or just spend a few days walking around Skipton. Free to access, just turn up and go. Best in autumn when the light's golden and you're not melting in the sun.
