Park Hill

From the top of this modest Yorkshire Dales peak, just north of Skipton, you'll get proper views across the limestone country without the crowds that flock to Pen-y-ghent or Ingleborough. Park Hill isn't the tallest summit you'll tackle in the Dales, but what it lacks in drama it makes up for in accessibility and decent panoramas.

Walkers looking for a half-day outing will find the ascent straightforward enough for older children, though you'll want to allow two to three hours for the round trip depending on your route. The grassy slopes can get boggy after rain, so decent boots are essential. On a clear day, you can pick out the familiar outline of Pen-y-ghent to the north and the rolling farmland that stretches towards the market town of Skipton below.

This makes a solid addition to a Yorkshire Dales camping break, particularly if you're staying at one of the sites near Bolton Abbey or around Malham. It's the sort of fell that rewards effort without demanding serious mountain skills - ideal for families wanting to ease into Dales walking. The summit itself is unmarked and fairly unremarkable, but the walk up through typical limestone pasture gives you a proper taste of this corner of North Yorkshire without the tourist buses.
