Snoddington Hill

The walk up Snoddington Hill is a proper workout, but you'll find yourself on one of the highest points in Wiltshire with views that stretch across the chalk downland towards Salisbury. It's the kind of place where you genuinely feel like you've earned the landscape - not a gentle stroll, but worthwhile if you're comfortable with a steep climb.

The hill itself is bare and exposed, which means the weather matters. On a clear day you can pick out the cathedral spire in Salisbury to the south, and the rolling curves of the surrounding downs in every direction. On a grey one, it's moody and atmospheric in its own way. Most people take between thirty minutes to an hour depending on fitness level and how many times you stop to catch your breath.

If you're staying at Salisbury Hillside Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just a few miles away, this works brilliantly as a half-day outing. Families with older kids who don't mind hills will get something out of it - the sense of elevation, the views, the space to run around at the top. Younger children might find the climb tedious, and it's genuinely not worth dragging them up if they're reluctant.

There's no visitor facility here, no car park facilities that I'm aware of, and no admission charge. It's just a hill. Bring water, proper footwear, and don't attempt it in heavy rain when the chalk gets slippery. Early morning or late afternoon gives you the best light for photographs, and fewer other walkers about.
