Snittlegarth Park

You'll find Snittlegarth Park just outside Wigton, a proper working nature reserve where the focus is on conservation rather than visitor facilities. It's the sort of place that appeals to serious birdwatchers and naturalists - expect wetlands, woodland, and open grassland rather than manicured paths and tea rooms.

The reserve is genuinely quiet. You get proper wildlife here: breeding birds in spring, migrating species in autumn, and if you're lucky, otters along the water channels. Walking the trails takes a couple of hours at a leisurely pace, though you can do a shorter loop if you've got young kids in tow. Bring binoculars, keep noise down, and you'll see more than the people marching about taking selfies.

It's free to visit, which is refreshing. No visitor centre, no gift shop nonsense. Just nature doing its thing. Winter mornings are brilliant for spotting - fewer tourists mucking about, and the bare trees make birds easier to spot. Summer's busier but still manageable outside school holidays.

Families who enjoy a gentle nature walk will get something from it; those expecting adventure playground facilities will be disappointed. It's a proper reserves experience - low key, undeveloped, and all the better for it.
