Snelsmore Common Country Park

Snelsmore Common is one of those places that sneaks up on you - a proper chunk of open heathland just outside Thatcham that feels like it's miles from anywhere, even though the town's practically on your doorstep. The landscape is genuinely unusual for Berkshire: rolling heath mixed with acid grassland, gorse scrub, and patches of woodland that shift colour through the seasons. It's the kind of space where you can actually breathe.

What you're doing here is walking. Miles of it, if you fancy, or just a gentle loop around the main paths. The views across the common are decent enough - nothing dramatic, but there's something about the openness that appeals. Bird watchers get excited about the place, and rightly so; you'll spot curlew and stone-curlew if you're lucky and patient. Families with younger kids might find an hour's walk sufficient before restlessness sets in, though older children will manage half a day without complaint.

It's free, and that matters when you're deciding whether to make the trip. The common is managed by West Berkshire Council and feels properly maintained without being over-tidy. Spring brings the gorse into flower - yellow sprawl across the heath - and autumn is genuinely lovely, though muddy underfoot after rain.

If you're staying at Rhodeside Caravan Club site just down the road, or Cherry Bird a few miles further on, this is the obvious morning or afternoon expedition. Close enough that you won't waste petrol, far enough that it feels like a proper outing.
