Lodge Copse

A modest stretch of woodland just outside Thatcham, Lodge Copse is the sort of place locals know and visitors often miss. It's nothing fancy - no visitor centre, no marked trails, no admission fee - just trees, footpaths, and the kind of quiet that comes when you're off the main tourist circuit.

You're looking at a working forest environment rather than a manicured country estate. The paths are decent enough for a straightforward walk, though conditions depend entirely on the season and recent weather. In winter it can get muddy. Summer is when it's most pleasant, though you'll share the space with the occasional dog walker and local jogger.

This works best as a short leg of something bigger - perhaps combining it with a loop from Thatcham itself, which sits just a couple of miles away. If you're staying at any of the nearby caravan parks - Cherry Bird, Rhodeside, Ravenswing, or Bishops Green - it's an easy detour for an hour's fresh air rather than a destination in itself. Families with restless young children might find it a bit limited; older kids and serious walkers will appreciate the peace. Birdwatchers could do well here too, though it's not famous for any particular species.

Don't expect grand views or dramatic landscape. Lodge Copse is proper woodland - undulating, enclosed, green. It's the sort of place that's brilliant if you want to clear your head, but not if you're chasing Instagram moments. Worth half a morning, certainly not worth planning a day around.
