Shaw House sits just outside Thatcham as a proper Elizabethan manor that's survived centuries of English upheaval with remarkable grace. Built in the 1580s, it's the kind of place that makes you actually understand what "period property" means - all those original features, the timber framing, the chimneys that still work. You wander through rooms that feel genuinely lived-in rather than museum-sterile, which is refreshing.

History buffs will spend a good couple of hours here taking in the architectural details and learning about the families who called it home. The grounds matter too - there's space to stretch your legs without it feeling like a forced march. Families with older kids who can appreciate the stories get more from it than toddlers might, though there's enough to keep most people occupied for an hour or so.

The location works well if you're based at one of the nearby caravan sites - Cherry Bird Country Park is just two miles away, and Bishops Green Farm Campsite sits at 3.7 miles, so you're not looking at a long drive. Rhodeside has excellent ratings if you're after a proper Club site. It's the sort of spot that makes sense as a rainy afternoon plan rather than a destination you'd travel hours for, but if you're staying locally, absolutely worth the detour. The market town of Thatcham is close enough for supplies and a decent pub afterwards.
