Snar Law

The walk up Snar Law, just outside Biggar, is proper steep and takes about forty-five minutes if you're moving at a decent pace. It's not a long hike by Scottish standards, but the gradient is relentless - your legs will know about it by the time you reach the cairn at the top.

Once there, though, the payoff is real. The views sweep across the Lowlands in a way that makes you understand why people bother with Scottish hills at all. On a clear day you can see for miles - moorland rolling away to the horizon, the landscape opening up like someone's pulled back a curtain. The summit itself is modest, just a stone marker, but the surrounding ridges give the whole thing a bit more grandeur than the modest 379 metres might suggest.

Walkers will appreciate the straightforwardness of it all. It's not technical, not exposed, just a solid climb with decent views. Families with older kids who don't mind a slog can manage it, though younger ones might find the climb tedious without much distraction along the way. The moorland terrain means there's not much in the way of shade either, so pick a decent day.

If you're staying at Mount View Caravan Park nearby, it's an easy drive to the trailhead and makes for a morning's exertion before heading back for lunch. The hill doesn't warrant a special journey on its own, but it slots in nicely alongside exploring the area around Biggar.
