Snape Warren

The warren itself is less 'destination' and more 'pleasant detour' - a stretch of open heathland just east of Kelsale where you can wander through low scrub and sandy soil that's been shaped by rabbits for centuries. What you're actually doing here is stepping into proper Suffolk heathland ecology. The landscape is gently rolling, dotted with gorse and heather depending on season, and genuinely peaceful if you time it right. Birdwatchers come for the nightjars and stone-curlews in summer months. Walkers appreciate the lack of crowds and the straightforward paths. Kids under ten might find it a bit samey after twenty minutes - there's no visitor centre, no facilities, no drama. It's just land that's been left to do what it does.

It's free to access and works best as a stop-off between the holiday parks clustered around Kelsale - Cakes & Ale and Carlton Meres are within easy striking distance - rather than a reason to visit East Anglia on its own. Allow forty-five minutes to an hour if you're properly exploring, or half that if you just want a leg-stretch en route to somewhere else. Go early morning in summer if you want the wildlife without the midges.

Pair it with a walk towards the coast or a visit to the nearby RSPB reserves if you're genuinely keen on heathland and birding. On its own merits? It's pleasant enough. Worth a detour only if you're already staying locally.
