Smithills Open Farm

The animals here are what you'd expect from a working farm that's opened its gates to the public - sheep, cattle, pigs, and poultry, mostly. Nothing exotic, but that's rather the point. Smithills sits on the outskirts of Bury and gives kids a proper hands-on experience with livestock that most of them won't get anywhere else. You can feed animals, watch demonstrations, and actually understand where food comes from, which sounds earnest but genuinely matters to most children under ten.

For families, this is a solid half-day outing rather than an all-day commitment. The walking is minimal, the crowds rarely overwhelming, and admission won't break the bank - though exact prices and opening hours would need confirming before you visit. It's the sort of place that works best on a dry day when the animals are most active. Muddy boots are guaranteed.

If you're based at Burrs Country Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, just six miles away, Smithills makes an easy morning trip before heading back for lunch. The campsite itself sits nicely for exploring the wider Lancashire area, but this farm is worth the short drive for anyone with young children. Don't expect animals in enclosures - this is field work, genuine farmland, so be prepared for a bit of a trudge if it's been raining. Worth it though.
