Smeffell Howe

A Bronze Age burial mound rising stubby and defiant from the North Yorkshire moorland near Pickering, Smeffell Howe rewards the curious walker with a proper dose of ancient Britain. There's not much to see in the theatrical sense - no gift shop, no interpretive panels, just a grassy knoll roughly 30 metres across that's been sitting here for three and a half thousand years. That's rather the point.

The mound itself is genuinely atmospheric once you've scrambled up it. The views across the moorland are quietly excellent, and standing on top you can almost sense the Bronze Age communities who used this as a burial site. Kids tend to find it underwhelming if they're expecting Stonehenge-style drama, but walkers and archaeology enthusiasts will appreciate the solitude and the chance to poke around an unmanaged archaeological site.

Access is straightforward and free - no gates or barriers. Allow 20 minutes if you're just making a quick detour, longer if you're on a proper moorland ramble. Pickering itself is a proper market town with decent facilities, and it's handily positioned between the North York Moors and the coast. Lakeside Caravan Park sits only 6 miles away and makes a solid base for exploring this corner of Yorkshire.

Worth a detour if you're already hiking the moors, but don't drive an hour specifically for it. The real reward here is combining it with a proper walk across the surrounding landscape.
