Go Ape

The moment you arrive at Go Ape Dalby, near Pickering, you're confronted with treetops rather than solid ground. This is an aerial adventure park set within Dalby Forest - a sprawling woodland that feels properly remote despite being just a short drive from the market town.

You'll spend two to three hours clipped into harnesses, swinging between platforms, conquering wobbly bridges, and launching yourself down zip lines strung between ancient trees. It's not for the faint-hearted, but the thrill is genuine. There are courses graded by difficulty, so families with teenagers can have a proper go, while younger kids might tackle gentler routes depending on the location's setup.

This works brilliantly as a half-day break during a caravan holiday at one of the nearby parks - Vale of Pickering Caravan Park and Lakeside Caravan Park are both within easy reach. After an hour of adrenaline and fresh air, most people are genuinely knackered and ready for a quieter afternoon.

You'll need to book ahead and pay for participation - it's not cheap, but you get professional instructors, safety equipment, and genuine entertainment rather than a con. Go on a quieter weekday if you can; summer Saturdays turn it into a bit of a scrum. The forest setting means it's sheltered from heavy rain better than you'd expect, though wet ropes are slippery and best avoided.
