Forestry England Dalby

The forest sprawls across 3,000 acres of mixed woodland south of Pickering, and it's the kind of place where you can lose a whole day without trying. Forestry England manages it properly - there are decent trails ranging from easy riverside walks to proper forest trudges that'll test your legs. Mountain biking has taken off here in recent years, with dedicated routes carved through the trees, so expect to share paths with cyclists if you're hiking at weekends.

What you actually get is acres of conifers, broadleaves, and open glades. The Dalby Stream runs through it, which means you're not just staring at tree trunks for hours. There are picnic spots, a visitor centre with facilities, and enough variation that families won't find themselves with restless kids after 90 minutes. Walkers will genuinely enjoy the network of routes - nothing too technical, but the forest itself is the draw rather than any single 'viewpoint'.

It's free to wander, though parking might have a small charge. Early mornings beat the weekend crowds by miles. The forest works brilliantly as a half-day break from any of the nearby caravan parks - Vale of Pickering and Lakeside are both within 30 minutes' drive. If you're based at one for a week, this is worth revisiting on different routes rather than trying to 'do it all' in one go. Bring proper shoes, especially after rain - it gets boggy in places.
