Smart's Quarry SSSI

A disused quarry near Kidwelly that's been left to nature - and nature's had a proper go at reclaiming it. Smart's Quarry SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) is the sort of place that gets geology nerds and wildlife watchers genuinely excited, though casual visitors might need to know what they're looking at to get the most from it.

The quarry itself exposes bands of coal and other geological layers that tell the industrial story of South Wales. Walk around the rim and you'll spot the old workings, vegetation creeping back over decades, and if you're lucky, some of the rarer plants and insects that thrive in these specialist habitats. It's not a manicured nature reserve with viewing platforms and information boards - it's the real thing, which means muddy paths and the occasional scramble.

Best suited to walkers and anyone with a genuine interest in industrial heritage or natural regeneration. Families might find it a bit underwhelming unless the kids are into rocks and fossils. There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so go prepared - proper footwear essential, especially after rain.

It slots nicely into a broader South Wales holiday if you're already exploring the Carmarthenshire coast around Kidwelly. Couple it with Pembrey Country Park just five miles away for a fuller day out - that one's got proper facilities and walking trails. Free to visit, as far as I can tell, though do check ahead as access can be restricted for conservation reasons.
