Pontyates Park

The Towy Valley opens up properly at Pontyates Park, a nature reserve that sits quietly between Kidwelly and the rolling Carmarthenshire countryside. It's not the sort of place that announces itself - no visitor centre, no café, no charge at the gate. Just woodland, riverside walks, and the chance to actually hear yourself think.

The park follows the river through mixed woodland where you'll spot woodland birds if you're lucky, and the path system is straightforward enough for families with younger legs, though it can get muddy after rain. Walkers come here for the Towy Valley Trail connections, and it works brilliantly as a morning outing if you're based at one of the holiday parks nearby - Gwlad Glamping is barely twenty minutes away, and Parkdean Resorts Carmarthen Bay is even closer. You're looking at a couple of hours max to properly explore the trails and soak in the riverside atmosphere.

It's the kind of reserve that rewards going off-season. Summer weekends can get a bit busy with local families, but midweek in spring or autumn you'll have the place almost to yourself. Worth the detour if you're after genuine peace rather than manicured attractions. Not massive - don't expect to spend a full day here - but perfectly decent for breaking up a park-based holiday with some actual outdoors time. The nearest facilities are back in Kidwelly, so bring what you need.
