Smallgill Rig

The walk up Smallgill Rig isn't long, but it's steep enough to catch you out if you're expecting a gentle stroll. From Biggar, you're looking at a drive south before heading out on foot, and within an hour or so you're standing on top of a proper Lowland peak with views that stretch across rolling farmland and moorland in all directions.

It's the kind of hill that doesn't announce itself loudly. You won't find tour buses or gift shops, just a genuine bit of Scottish countryside where walkers actually outnumber visitors. The ridge itself is straightforward - once you've tackled the initial climb, the path follows the high ground quite naturally, with views opening out as you gain height.

This works well for families with older kids and anyone after a proper walk without needing a full day or technical gear. The ascent takes solid effort though, so not one for very young children or anyone nursing a hangover. The views alone make it worthwhile - on a clear day you can see well beyond the immediate area, which matters more than you'd expect from a hill that's only moderately high.

If you're based at Mount View Caravan Park near Biggar, this is an excellent half-day venture. Go early to avoid midday crowds, and bring something waterproof - the weather rolls in quickly up there. Winter visits are possible but stick to when there's been no recent snow, as the exposed section can be treacherous.
