Slight Side

The walk up Slight Side rewards you with proper fell views across the Langdale Valley without the crowds that swarm Scafell Pike. It's a modest peak by Lake District standards - nothing that'll wreck your legs - but the vantage point over Great Langdale and the Pikes beyond makes it genuinely worth the effort.

The route isn't particularly well-marked, which keeps casual visitors away. You'll find yourself navigating rough ground and the odd scramble, but nothing that demands mountaineering skills. Most walkers allow two to three hours return from Ambleside, depending on fitness and how long you linger at the top. On a clear day, the panorama stretches across Bowfell, Crinkle Crags, and beyond - it's the kind of view that justifies being out on the fells.

Families with older kids and regular hikers will get the most from it. Young children might find the navigation tedious, and it's not the sort of place to dash up in trainers. The terrain demands proper walking boots and an OS map or decent GPS.
