Slieve Binnian North Tor

Rocky granite outcrops jut skyward from this prominent peak in the heart of the Mourne Mountains, offering some of the most dramatic views in Northern Ireland. The North Tor sits at 747 metres on Slieve Binnian's summit ridge, accessible via a challenging but rewarding hike from the Silent Valley or Annalong Wood.

Serious walkers will find this proper mountain terrain - the ascent takes most people 3-4 hours return and demands decent boots and navigation skills. The reward? Sweeping panoramas across the Irish Sea to the Isle of Man on clear days, with the distinctive Mourne Wall snaking across neighbouring peaks.

Families with young children should give this one a miss - it's steep, rocky, and potentially dangerous in poor weather. Mountain enthusiasts and experienced hikers, however, will find it absolutely cracking. The granite tors themselves make for brilliant scrambling if you're comfortable on rock.

Best tackled on clear days when visibility allows the full spectacle. Winter ascents are possible but require proper gear and experience. The mountain is free to access year-round, though weather can change rapidly.

From Newcastle, it's well positioned for exploring other Mourne peaks during a longer stay. Several holiday parks around Annalong and the Bloody Bridge area provide good bases for serious mountain walking, with Tollymore Forest Park offering gentler alternatives for rest days.
