Slieve Bearnagh North Tor

Standing at 739 metres, this rocky summit offers some of the finest views in the Mournes, with the distinctive granite tor providing a proper mountaineering feel without the technical climbing. The North Tor is actually the higher of Slieve Bearnagh's two peaks, crowned with a jumble of weathered granite blocks that kids love scrambling over.

Getting here requires a decent walk - most people approach via the Annalong Valley or from Silent Valley, making it a solid half-day commitment. The route isn't particularly well-marked, so confident walkers only. Once you're up, the 360-degree views take in the Irish Sea, Slieve Donard, and on clear days, the Scottish coast.

Families with older children who enjoy proper hill walking will find this rewarding, though it's definitely not buggy-friendly terrain. The granite tors are brilliant for photos, and there's something quite special about standing on these ancient rocks. Weather changes fast up here, so come prepared.

From Newcastle, it's perfectly positioned for a Mournes walking holiday. Several campsites like Tollymore Campsite and Bloody Bridge Campsite sit within striking distance, making this an excellent base for tackling multiple peaks. Allow four to six hours for the round trip, depending on your route choice.
