About Slievenaglogh

Standing at 445 metres, this rocky outcrop might not be the tallest of the Mourne Mountains, but it punches well above its weight for views. The climb from Newcastle takes about an hour and a half up a well-marked path that gets properly steep towards the summit - your calves will know about it.

From the top, you get cracking panoramas across Dundrum Bay and the Irish Sea, with the higher peaks of Slieve Donard and Slieve Commedagh looming impressively to the south. On clear days, you can spot the Isle of Man floating on the horizon. The summit itself is a proper rocky affair with plenty of space to sit and catch your breath.

Walkers with reasonable fitness will love this one - it's challenging enough to feel like an achievement without being a full-day slog. Families with older kids (say 10-plus) should manage fine, though the final scramble over granite boulders might put off those with dodgy knees. Weather can change fast up here, so pack layers and waterproofs.

The mountain sits perfectly between several campsites near Newcastle, including Tollymore Campsite and Bloody Bridge Campsite, making it an excellent day hike from your holiday base. Early morning starts reward you with fewer crowds and often clearer skies for those Instagram shots.
