Slieve Binnian North Top

Standing at 742 metres, this secondary summit of Slieve Binnian delivers knockout views across the Mournes without the crowds that swarm the main peak. I'll be honest - it's a proper slog to get here, involving a steep scramble over granite tors that'll test your legs and lungs. But that's precisely why it works.

From Newcastle, the approach follows the Annalong Valley before branching off towards the Binnian massif. Experienced hill walkers will relish the challenge, though families with younger children should stick to the easier Mournes trails. The final push involves some mild scrambling - nothing too technical, but you'll want decent boots and a clear day.

What makes this summit special is the 360-degree panorama. On a good day, you can see across to Scotland, down the Irish Sea coast, and over the entire Mourne range. It's particularly stunning in autumn when the bracken turns golden.

Allow a full day for the round trip from any of the nearby campsites. Tollymore Campsite and Annalong Holiday Park both make excellent bases, putting you within striking distance of multiple Mourne peaks. The mountain is free to climb year-round, though winter conditions can be seriously challenging. Come prepared with proper gear and mountain experience - this isn't a casual afternoon stroll.
