Slatch Wood

Ancient oak and beech trees stretch overhead as you wander into this proper old woodland near Malvern. Slatch Wood feels wonderfully forgotten, the sort of place where deer still bolt at your approach and fungi sprout undisturbed from fallen logs. The paths aren't marked with fancy signs - you're following deer tracks and natural clearings, which makes it feel like genuine exploring rather than a sanitised nature walk.

Families with older children will love the freedom here. Younger ones might find the lack of clear trails frustrating, but anyone who enjoys a bit of woodland wandering will find it properly rewarding. The canopy creates lovely dappled light filtering down, and in autumn the whole place glows amber and gold.

Bring proper walking boots - the ground can get muddy, especially after rain. An hour or two is plenty for most visitors, though you could easily spend half a day here if you're really into wildlife spotting. It's free to explore, naturally.

For those staying at the various sites around Malvern - Out To Grass Camping or Oakmere Parks - this makes a cracking alternative to the more crowded Malvern Hills. Less spectacular views perhaps, but far more peaceful. Perfect for morning walks when the mist still clings to the trees.
