Lowe Coppice

Ancient oak and ash trees create a proper woodland canopy at this small forest tucked away in the Herefordshire countryside. Lowe Coppice isn't going to fill an entire afternoon, but it's a lovely spot for a gentle walk if you're staying near Malvern and fancy stretching your legs without tackling the hills.

The woodland follows traditional coppicing patterns - you'll spot evidence of old management techniques where trees were cut to encourage new growth. Dog walkers seem to know about this place, though it's quiet enough that you're unlikely to bump into crowds. Families with young children will find it manageable, though there's not much in the way of formal paths or facilities.

Birds are the main attraction here. Spring brings a decent chorus, and if you're lucky, you might spot woodpeckers working the older trees. The forest floor comes alive with bluebells in May, making it well worth a detour if you're timing coincides.

Allow an hour at most unless you're particularly keen on woodland photography. It's the sort of place that works well as part of a longer day out - perhaps combined with exploring Malvern itself or the nearby hills. Several holiday parks including Out To Grass Camping and Malvern View are within easy reach, making it a handy addition to a Herefordshire break rather than a destination in its own right.
