Skellingthorpe Playing Field "The Monson"

The Monson at Skellingthorpe Playing Field is a working gravel pit that's been left to nature - and it's surprisingly good for it. Just outside Lincoln, this reserve has become a proper hotspot for birdwatchers and anyone after a quiet walk by water. The flooded extraction areas have created shallow lagoons where you'll spot everything from common grebes to the occasional rarer visitor, depending on the season. It's the kind of place that rewards a slow morning with binoculars rather than a quick dash through.

Walkers will find it straightforward enough, with open views across the water and paths that don't demand much fitness. Photographers get decent angles, especially early on when the light's low and the birds are most active. Allow a good hour if you're seriously birding, less if you just want a gentle circuit.

That said, it's not a manicured visitor attraction - there are no facilities, no café, no interpretation boards telling you what you're looking at. You either come prepared or you don't get much from it. Families with young kids might find it a bit dull unless they're already keen on nature; birdwatchers and photographers will absolutely justify the drive from Lincoln.

The reserve sits handily between several good caravan bases - Lakeside Touring is closest at under four miles, with Four Seasons Country Park just beyond. Perfect if you're camping in the area and want to add a morning's wildlife watching to your itinerary without dragging everyone round yet another stately home.
