Skell Gill Wood

The woodland path at Skell Gill drops steeply into a proper ravine, with the beck running dark and quick below. You get a real sense of stepping away from the Ripon area the moment you enter - the noise from the town just vanishes. The gill itself is the main draw: moss-covered stones, ferns unfurling from the banks, water splashing over rocks that look like they've been shaped specifically to create pools. It's genuinely lovely in spring when the woodland floor goes green and the light filters through the canopy.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a gentle meander - the path is uneven, boggy in places, and the steep descent means you're committing to the walk rather than popping in for twenty minutes. There's no car park at the entrance and the approach is a bit of a trek from nearby Ripon. It's the kind of place you'd pair with a day exploring the wider countryside rather than visiting in isolation.

If you're staying at Woodhouse Farm Holiday Park, it's close enough for a proper morning walk. Allow a solid two hours to get down into the wood, explore the gill properly, and climb back out. Go early in the day if possible - the light's better and you'll avoid others. Kids who like scrambling over rocks and paddling will enjoy it; those expecting a flat stroll might find it hard work.
