Camp Hill

You're standing on a windswept hilltop near Ripon looking at what amounts to a series of earthwork ridges and ditches - and that's rather the point. Camp Hill is an Iron Age fort, though "fort" might oversell what you're actually seeing. There's no dramatic stonework or reconstructed palisade here, just the subtle topography that reveals where ancient Britons once built their defences, probably sometime between 500 and 100 BC.

It's the kind of place that rewards a bit of imagination. Walk the perimeter and you can trace the defensive ditches; stand in what was likely the interior and you're getting a genuine sense of how these communities organised their settlements. For archaeology enthusiasts or local historians, this is genuinely worthwhile - the landscape archaeology tells a proper story if you know how to read it.

Families with younger children might find it underwhelming. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards that I'm aware of, and without context it just looks like bumpy ground. Older kids interested in history or keen walkers will find it more rewarding. The site is freely accessible, as far as I can tell, and it's a straightforward walk from nearby Ripon.

If you're based at one of the holiday parks in the area - Sleningford Watermill or Woodhouse Farm are closest at around three and a half miles - it makes a decent half-hour detour during a walking afternoon. Combine it with exploring Ripon's market square and the cathedral, and you've got a solid morning sorted.
