Six Acre Plantation

Six Acre Plantation is a proper little woodland tucked away near Chippenham, the sort of place that rewards a quiet morning wander rather than demanding your entire afternoon. It's exactly what it says on the tin - six acres of mixed forest where you can lose yourself among the trees without needing a map or GPS. The paths are straightforward enough, though muddy after rain, and there's something oddly restorative about forest floors thick with leaf litter and the occasional bird call.

This works best for anyone who just wants to escape the caravan for an hour or so. Serious hikers might find it a bit short, and restless kids could get bored fairly quickly - there's no playground, no café, no razz and dazzle. But if you're based at Roe Deer Fields or Plough Lane just down the road, it's a handy spot to stretch your legs when the weather's reasonable.

I'd go on a weekday if possible. Weekends bring the local dog walkers, which is fine until you're trying to enjoy a bit of solitude. Wear proper boots - it's damper than you'd expect even in dry spells. The forest itself is unremarkable in the grand scheme of Wiltshire woodlands, but that's rather the point. Sometimes a walk doesn't need to be epic to do its job.
