Site of South Gate

The Roman walls of Colchester are among the best preserved in Britain, and the South Gate - Porta Meridionalis - once stood as one of four main entrances into this fortress town. What remains today is rather less dramatic than you might hope. You're looking at a section of the original wall itself, which survives to a decent height, but the gate structure proper has long since vanished. Still, it's worth a wander if you're already poking about Colchester's town centre.

This is really one for history buffs rather than casual visitors. The Romans built this defensive wall around 70 AD, and the South Gate would have been a proper checkpoint - soldiers, merchants, the works. Walking past the surviving masonry, you get a sense of the scale of Roman engineering, even if the imagination has to do a lot of heavy lifting. The town centre sits very close by, so you're not making a special journey.

There's no visitor facility here - no café, no interpretation board, nothing fancy. It's free to visit and takes about fifteen minutes to see properly. If you're camping at Colchester Country Park or Rushbanks Farm, both are within easy reach, and the site slots nicely into a broader exploration of Colchester's Roman heritage. The town has plenty more to offer beyond this particular spot. Come early morning if you want decent photos without crowds.
