Site of Roman fortlet

Grass-covered mounds and subtle earthworks mark where Roman soldiers once kept watch over this corner of Herefordshire. What remains of this fortlet won't set pulses racing - there's precious little to see beyond gentle ridges in the turf and the odd depression that might have been a ditch. But history buffs with a good imagination will appreciate standing where legionnaires patrolled nearly two millennia ago.

The site sits in farmland just outside Hereford, and you'll need to know what you're looking for to spot the archaeological remains. There are no information boards or formal access arrangements, so this is very much a case of parking respectfully and having a wander. Ten minutes should cover it unless you're particularly taken with Roman military engineering.

Families with young children might find it a bit underwhelming - there's not much to capture restless imaginations here. It's better suited to those who get a proper thrill from connecting with the past, however faintly the evidence remains. The walk across the fields is pleasant enough on a decent day.

If you're staying at one of the nearby sites like Hereford Camping and Caravanning Club or The Millpond, both under two miles away, it makes for a brief historical detour rather than a destination in itself. Worth combining with a visit to Hereford's more substantial Roman and medieval attractions.
