Simpson's Saltings

The salt marshes around Simpson's Saltings near Woodbridge are properly atmospheric - wide open flats where the River Deben meets the North Sea, all mudflats and creeks and the kind of silence that feels properly loud. There's not much here in the traditional sense. No visitor centre, no café, no gift shop. Just a landscape that's been shaped by tidal water for centuries, still harvested for salt in places, still home to wading birds and the occasional seal poking its head up.

This is walking country, full stop. The estuary trails around here reward proper exploration - you can track the water's edge for miles if you've got the legs for it, picking your way through reed beds where curlews call and the light bounces off the water in that particular East Anglian way. It's not dramatic, but it's oddly magnetic. Bring binoculars if you care about birds. Bring Wellington boots if you care about your feet.

Historians and nature types will genuinely enjoy themselves. Families with young children might find it a bit slow after twenty minutes unless they're the type who like mud and patience. Autumn and early winter are best - the light's cleaner, the crowds from Woodbridge are elsewhere, and the migratory birds are passing through.

Both Run Cottage Touring Park and Wantisden Park are close enough for a morning expedition. Treat Simpson's Saltings as part of a wider Deben Valley walk rather than a standalone destination.
