Silverhill Coppice

Silverhill Coppice is a proper woodland walk just outside Newent, the sort of place that rewards you for leaving the main roads. It's densely wooded - oak and hazel mostly - which means it stays green and cool even on warm days, and there's enough path network that you won't feel hemmed in by the trees. You'll see bluebells in spring, which is the obvious draw, but honestly the wood has decent walking most of the year. The ground can get boggy after rain, so bring proper boots.

This is walkers' territory rather than a tourist attraction. You won't find a car park with a visitor centre or refreshments - it's just woodland. Most people spend between 45 minutes and two hours here depending on which paths you take. It works well if you're camped at one of the nearby sites like Pelerine or Cwtch Cabins, both within easy reach of Newent, and you want to fill a morning without driving elsewhere.

Family groups with young children might find it a bit limited after the initial novelty wears off. Teenagers who like proper walking will get more from it. There's no admission charge as far as anyone can tell, and no facilities, so plan accordingly. Best visited in spring or early autumn when the underfoot conditions are decent and the light filters through the canopy nicely. Summer can feel claustrophobic, and winter renders it fairly dark. If you're basing yourself in the Newent area for a caravan holiday, Silverhill is worth a morning detour - but don't plan a whole day around it.
