Silchester Roman Town Walls & Amphitheatre

The red sandstone walls of Silchester rise abruptly from the Hampshire countryside like a ghost of Roman Britain refusing to fade. You're looking at the remains of Calleva Atrebatum, once a thriving settlement that sprawled across 45 acres behind these defences, and the walls themselves - standing up to 25 feet high in places - are properly impressive even in ruin.

Walking the circuit takes a solid couple of hours if you're doing it properly, and it's genuinely rewarding. The amphitheatre sits to the southwest of the walls, less dramatic than the fortifications themselves but significant if you know what you're looking at. It's the sort of place where you can actually stand inside a 2,000-year-old structure and feel the weight of it.

Historically minded adults will get far more from this than families with restless kids - there's no visitor centre, no café, just the archaeology and your own imagination. The openness means it can feel a touch bleak on a grey day, but that's also rather honest. Free to wander, no facilities that I could find, best visited on a clear morning when the light catches those red walls properly.

You're close enough to Reading for supplies, and both Ravenswing Park and Wellington Country Park make decent bases for a longer stay. Either would be suited to combining a morning at Silchester with something more obviously family-focused in the afternoon. Worth the detour if Roman sites grip you. Otherwise, it's bit austere.
