Signal Rock

The walk up to Signal Rock from Ballachulish takes about twenty minutes if you're moving at a decent pace, and the view across Loch Leven makes every step worth it. This isn't some grand fortress or manicured viewpoint - it's a proper Highland vantage point with genuine historical weight. The rock itself was used as a signalling post during the 1745 Jacobite Rising, which gives the whole thing a bit of edge when you're standing there looking out over the water.

It's a straightforward hill walk rather than a scramble, so families with older kids will manage fine, though the younger ones might find the climb tedious. Most people allow thirty to forty minutes total, including a breather at the top. The real appeal is that you get something tangible - a landmark with a story - rather than just another pretty view, and that matters when the weather's threatening and you can't quite justify the effort.

If you're based at Red Squirrel Campsite or Invercoe, both within spitting distance, this works brilliantly as a morning mission before heading elsewhere in Glencoe. The terrain is rocky underfoot so proper boots help. There's no facilities at the rock itself, so bring water. On clear days the perspective of Loch Leven stretches properly - on cloudy ones you get atmosphere instead, which honestly suits the Jacobite history rather well.
