Sidley Recreation Ground

A flat, open expanse just outside Bexhill-on-Sea, Sidley Recreation Ground does what it says on the tin - it's a nature reserve, but don't expect dramatic cliffs or rare bird hides. What you get instead is straightforward Sussex woodland and grassland, the sort of place locals walk their dogs and families let kids burn off energy without needing to plan an expedition.

The ground itself is manageable on foot, with paths threading through scrub and open areas. It's not challenging terrain, which makes it ideal for families with younger children or anyone after a gentle hour away from the seafront bustle. Birdwatchers might find something of interest during migration seasons, though it's hardly Dungeness. The reserve has genuine ecological value without being showy about it.

The real strength here is proximity. Park up at Park Holidays UK just 0.7 miles away, or one of the other caravan sites dotted around - Combe Haven and Crowhurst are both within three and a half miles - and you've got instant access to green space. It's the sort of place you don't travel for specifically, but you'd be grateful for if you're staying nearby for a week. No fees to worry about, no timetables to check.

Give it an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're thorough. It fills a gap nicely between beach days and proper countryside walks, though it won't blow anyone away. Best visited early morning when you might actually spot wildlife.
