Sidhean Rèidh

The walk up Sidhean Rèidh is straightforward enough, and that's rather the point. From Tarbert, you're looking at a decent hike to this Argyll peak, but it rewards you with proper views across the Kintyre peninsula without the serious scrambling you'd face on higher tops elsewhere in the region.

It's the sort of walk that suits families with decent legs or anyone after a solid afternoon's graft without the technical faffing about. The hill itself sits at a reasonable height - high enough to feel like you've earned it, not so brutal that you're cursing yourself halfway up. Weather matters here, as it does everywhere on the west coast, so pick a clear day if you possibly can.

Allow three to four hours for the round trip depending on fitness and how long you linger at the top. There's nothing formal about access - it's free, and you simply head out from Tarbert. The terrain is moorland and grass, which beats rock-hopping when your knees are aching.

If you're based at Port Ban Holiday Park down the coast, this makes a proper day out without too much driving. The views justify the effort, though I wouldn't call it spectacular in the dramatic sense. It's more understated - rolling countryside, water views, that particular light you get on the Scottish west coast when the clouds shift. Walkers who like a genuine day out on their feet will get more from it than those after a quick snapshot.
