Shrivenham Canal Park

The canal here is the real draw - a proper stretch of the Wilts and Berks that actually feels quiet, which is saying something. You get a mile or so of towpath that loops through the nature reserve, water on one side, scrubland and wildflower patches on the other. It's the kind of place where you'll spot water voles if you're patient, and the bird life is genuinely decent, especially in spring.

Walkers will find it manageable rather than spectacular. The towpath is flat, well-maintained, and you can do the circuit in under an hour without rushing. Families with younger kids appreciate the straightforward route and the occasional bench for a sit-down. The canal itself is calm - no fancy locks or dramatic scenery, just a slice of working waterway the way it actually is.

Timing-wise, early morning or late afternoon beats midday by miles. The light's better, you're less likely to collide with cyclists, and you'll see more wildlife. Spring and early summer are when the reserve really livens up. The whole thing's free, obviously - it's a nature reserve, not a theme park.

Fit it in with a stay at Faringdon Grange (3.8 miles away) if you're after a proper park holiday base. It's close enough for a morning walk without it being a trek. Not life-changing, but honest and worth the time if you're in Oxfordshire and fancy a straightforward canal towpath stroll.
