Shrewsbury School Boathouses

These Victorian boathouses belong to one of England's oldest public schools, and watching the daily training sessions gives you a proper glimpse into a world most of us never see.

The red-brick buildings sit right on the riverbank, all Gothic arches and weathered stone. You can walk along the towpath and peer through the open doors at rows of racing shells suspended from the rafters like giant white insects. During term time, the place buzzes with activity as crews launch for practice sessions.

Rowing enthusiasts will love spotting the different boat classes and watching technique up close. For families, it's more of a pleasant riverside stroll that might hold the kids' attention for twenty minutes or so. The real draw is the setting - this stretch of the Severn through Shrewsbury is properly lovely, with the medieval town rising up the hill beyond.

Best visited during school term when there's actual activity to see. Outside those times, you're essentially looking at empty boat sheds, which isn't exactly thrilling. If you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Oxon Hall or Love2Stay, it makes a decent stop while exploring Shrewsbury's riverside walks, but don't make a special trip just for this.
