Shotover Hill

The walk up Shotover Hill rewards you with proper views across the Oxfordshire countryside - on a clear day you'll spot the Cotswolds rolling away to the west. It's a decent climb from Oxford itself, taking the best part of an hour depending on your pace, but nothing that'll leave you gasping.

This is sandstone country, and the hill itself has that warm, honey-coloured geology you see all through this part of England. The summit sits around 400 metres up, which sounds modest until you're actually doing the walk. Local history types will find it interesting - there's been a fortified settlement here since Saxon times, and the views explain why: strategic position, sight lines for miles.

Walkers should budget a good couple of hours if you're starting from central Oxford and want to linger at the top. Families with younger kids might find the ascent a bit much, though it's manageable in stages. The real draw is the viewpoint itself rather than facilities - there's nothing up there, so bring water.
