Shotley Pier

The pier at Shotley juts out into the Orwell Estuary like a finger pointing towards the North Sea, and on a clear day you can watch the container ships heading into Felixstowe port. It's a proper working pier, not some tourist attraction dolled up for the cameras - fishing boats tie up here, locals cast their lines, and the whole thing feels genuinely lived-in.

You get a solid walk out to the end, enough to work up an appetite but not so far that young children will grumble about aching legs. The views back towards Harwich are decent, and if you time it right around sunset the light does something quite nice across the water. There's a real sense of being at the edge of something - that liminal space where land stops and the estuary takes over.

It's free to wander out here, which is refreshing. No admission fees, no gift shop, just a pier that's been doing its job for decades. Allow 45 minutes to an hour if you want to stroll the full length and back without rushing. The walk's easy enough for families, though it can get a bit breezy and there's not much shelter if the weather turns.
