You'll get a decent walk out of it. The circuit around the water takes a couple of hours without rushing, taking you through rough moorland scrub and past old stone walls that predate the reservoir itself. It's the sort of place where you notice things - the light hitting the water at odd angles, grouse breaking cover suddenly, the way the wind shifts in minutes from calm to properly bracing. Walkers will appreciate it far more than those after a gentle stroll with a picnic blanket.

Winter and autumn suit it best. Summer can feel a bit bleak when the water level drops and you're left staring at exposed banks. The nearest proper facilities are back in Rossendale, so come prepared. Entry is free - you just turn up and go.
