Shore Hill

The walk up to Shore Hill rewards you with proper views across the Weald - not the most dramatic summit in Kent, but genuinely worth the climb if you're already in the Sevenoaks area. The peak itself is modest in height, yet the surrounding woodland and open vistas make it a straightforward afternoon outing rather than a gruelling hike.

You get genuine sightlines across rolling countryside, which beats most of what passes for "peaks" in the South East. It's the sort of place where families with reasonably confident walkers will spend a decent ninety minutes, though older kids might find it a bit slight if they've done proper hills elsewhere. The terrain is manageable and well-trodden, no scrambling required.

If you're based at either Thriftwood Country Park or Gatehouse Wood Country Park - both solid options within a few miles - Shore Hill makes a natural break from the holiday park routine. It's free to access and there's no time pressure, so you can amble rather than march. The woodland around the base is pleasant enough, though nothing particularly rare or showy.

Timing-wise, spring and autumn are best - you'll avoid the height of summer mugginess and the paths don't get churned up. Allow two to three hours if you want to include a proper look around rather than just bagging the summit. For walkers after a straightforward half-day outing within reach of Sevenoaks, it does the job without fuss.
