Shop Hill

The walk up Shop Hill rewards you with proper views across the Northumberland borderlands - the kind of perspective that makes you understand why this corner of England feels properly wild. It's not a mountain by any stretch, but the climb is steady enough that you'll feel you've earned the summit. From the top, the landscape rolls out in every direction: rolling moorland, distant hills, and on a clear day you can pick out the Cheviot range to the south.

This is walker territory, no question. It's the sort of place families with older kids will enjoy, though younger ones might find the ascent tedious without proper incentive (the views are the reward, not the walk itself). You're looking at roughly two hours for a comfortable round trip from Belford, depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top.

What makes Shop Hill work as part of a caravan holiday is its accessibility from the numerous parks dotted around the area. South Meadows sits closest at just over three miles away, while if you're based at Riverside Wooler or Budle Bay Campsite, you're within easy striking distance. The walk itself is straightforward - no scrambling, no technical bits - which means you can tackle it in regular hiking boots and still have energy for an evening in town afterwards.

Timing matters here. Spring and autumn give you the clearest skies and least crowded paths. Go at midday in July and you might well have company, but early morning or late afternoon feels considerably more rewarding. Free to access, as all proper fell walks should be.
