Walk into Shoot Rough and you're immediately struck by how quietly dense it all is - towering conifers crowding out the sky, their needles thick on the ground. This Shropshire woodland sits a short drive from Willstone and offers proper forest walking without the crowds you'd find at bigger attractions. The paths wind through mixed woodland, with enough variety to keep you interested for a couple of hours, though it's not exactly a destination that demands a full day.

It's ideal for walkers wanting something low-key and families with older kids who won't complain about tree after tree after tree. Younger children might lose interest fairly quickly unless you're keen on spotting birds or making a game of it. The whole thing has that slightly unkempt, working-forest feel rather than manicured park vibes, which some will love and others will find a bit scrappy.

If you're staying at Mill Farm Holiday Park or Spring Field Dark Skies Eco Camp nearby, Shoot Rough makes an easy morning or afternoon slot. The Dark Skies camp in particular suits the mood here - quiet, low-impact, no bright lights. Admission appears to be free, which sweetens the deal considerably. Best visited in drier months; after heavy rain the paths get boggy. Bring proper boots and don't expect facilities beyond what nature provides. Allow two hours max unless you're genuinely interested in forestry.
