Ship Hill

Ship Hill doesn't announce itself with fanfare, which is rather the point. It's a modest rise in Bracknell Forest that rewards a short walk with proper views across the Surrey and Berkshire borderlands - the kind of spot locals know but visitors often miss entirely.

The walk itself is straightforward enough, taking you through woodland that's pleasant without being spectacular. What you get at the top is an open perspective across rolling countryside, nothing dramatic but genuinely worth the effort if you're based nearby at one of the caravan parks around Chertsey. From Chertsey Caravan Park or Warfield Park, it's an easy morning outing - the sort of thing that justifies leaving the caravan rather than having it dominate your day.

History types will appreciate that this is proper English downland, the kind of landscape that's shaped settlement patterns for centuries. It's not a tourist trap with interpretive boards and coach parking. There's no admission charge (as far as we can establish) and you can move at your own pace - give it ninety minutes if you're dawdling, an hour if you're purposeful.

Best visited outside school holidays when the woodland feels genuinely peaceful. Families with restless younger children might find the novelty wears thin, but walkers after a genuine, unvarnished piece of the Surrey Hills will find it does exactly what it should. Fair-weather shoes won't cut it after rain, mind you - it's proper muddy in winter.
