Shepreth Recreation Ground

The Recreation Ground at Shepreth is one of those spaces that creeps up on you. You're expecting a standard bit of Essex scrubland, but instead you get proper wetland habitat with genuine wildlife value. It's marshy, boggy in places, and absolutely alive with birdwatchers during migration season.

What you're actually doing here is walking trails through reedbeds and wet grassland, stopping regularly to spot birds - mallards, teal, various warblers depending on the time of year. There's a small visitors' hide where you can settle in and watch. It's quiet, genuinely quiet, which feels rare this close to civilisation. The light's particularly good in late afternoon when the reeds catch the sun.

Birders and nature photographers will get the most from it. Families with patient kids who enjoy spotting things rather than running about will find it worthwhile. Casual walkers might feel it's a bit limited - the trails don't cover huge distances and there's not much in the way of drama or views. Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're serious about the birdwatching.

It works well as a morning trip before heading to either Guilden Gate Glamping or Pightle Farm if you're based nearby. Royston's close enough for lunch afterward. Go in spring or autumn for the migrating birds; summer can be quiet and the flies are brutal.
