Sheepfold

You'll find the remains of an ancient stone enclosure up on the Devon moorland, about a mile walk from Lynton. What survives is essentially a circular dry-stone structure - low walls that once penned sheep, though nobody's entirely sure when it was built. Roman era, Iron Age, medieval - take your pick. The moorland around it rolls away properly, with views across to Exmoor, and on a clear day you can see far enough to make the climb worthwhile.

Walkers get the most from this one. It's not a sit-down attraction with a cafe - it's a reason to be out on the hills, best tackled as part of a longer moorland ramble rather than a destination in itself. You're looking at perhaps twenty minutes to poke around the stones once you've got there, then another twenty getting back down. The walk in is straightforward enough, though the ground's uneven and can be boggy depending on weather. Free to visit, obviously - there's nothing here that requires admission.

If you're staying at Lynmouth Holiday Retreat, it's a decent half-morning jaunt, especially if the weather's kind. The moorland itself matters more than the site does. That said, don't expect excavations or information boards. You get the stones, the views, and the sense of people having put effort into building something to last on this exposed stretch of Devon. That's the appeal, really.
